Crystal Cascades Trail

Nice easy short hike (0.7 mi., 160’ vertical out and back) to real pretty cascading waterfall. This is in the Glen House area along Pinkham Notch. There are many branch trails from easy to hard if you have the urge for additional fun. This area can get crowded on weekends. No access to the water. Good hike for kids. Après hike in Gorham on the way back to the campground.

Ripley Falls Trail

Short hike (1mi., 308’ vertical out and back) to a cascading waterfall 100’ high. Small flow in the dry season but beautiful following a rain. Trail follows along a stream. Good place to cool off tired feet. Nice kids hike. In the Crawford Notch area. Can be crowded on weekends. Best days are Mid week. Fabyans (restaurant) or Yayas (deli) for lunch (après hike) on the way back to campground.

Tin Mountain Trail

Shorten this hike to just the TIN MINE hike (1mi., 200’ vertical out and back) to an abandoned tin mine with a very interesting history. Sounds a little bit like Bernie Madoff’s great grandfather had a hand in it. Great hike for little kids. Look for the SIGN (.3 mi.) on left along the tin mountain trail leading to the mine. Aprés hike at J-Town Deli in Jackson (great craft beer and sandwiches) on the way back to the campground.

Boy Mountain*

Short hike (1.4 mi., 662’ vertical) to overlook of route 2 and Appalachia. A little climb with a bench at the top to take a break. 5 min. ride from campground makes it a great afternoon hike. Not crowded. Parking across the street from the trailhead. Go to the left of the spring water spout and follow the field to the tree line. The trail becomes apparent there. Nice hike for active kids.

Baldface Circle to Emerald Poll

Hike (1.6 mi., 216’ vertical) and SWIM. Bring a towel. Real young kids might not be able to swim here, pool is sort of deep. Very cool and refreshing, crystal clear. Located in Evan’s Notch about 1-1/2 hrs. from Campground, but the Notch is a beautiful drive. Take Rte. 2 through Gorham to Gilead Me. Then right on 113 (beautiful ride and views). Maps says it’s closed, it’s not. Parking is across the street.

Shelburne Basin Falls

Quick hike (1.9 mi., 380’ vertical) to real nice SWIMMING HOLE. Take route 2 through Gorham. Parking is limited along a few roadside spaces. The basin is deep and can be jumped into by young swimmers. Easy hike for kids, and smaller pools for hikers who haven’t mastered the water yet. A great place to cool off. Mid week might be best due to limited parking.

Rattlesnake Pool

NO RATTLESNAKES, just a name. 2.1 mi., 216’ vertical hike to a nice clear, cool SWIMMING HOLE. Accessability may be difficult for younger children, but agile kids don’t seem to have any problem getting to it. While there don’t miss the Gorge, slight side trail. It’s impressive. This also is located in Evan’s Notch. Some distance from campground (1-1/2 hr.), but beautiful drive through the notch down 113 with views. Take rte. 2 to Gilead and right on 113. Maps says it’s closed but it’s not.

Lookout Ledge *

It’s about a 5 minute drive from the campground east on rte. 2. The Hike is 2.4 mi. with 964’ vertical rise to a gorgeous view of the presidential mountains, particularly Madison, the Adams, and Jefferson. The elevation gain will get the cardiovascular moving, but the hike is not long and there are no real steeps. Being close by makes it a great afternoon hike.

Haystack Mountain Trail *

An easy hike (2.6 mi., 633’ vertical) for about 98% of the hike. The very top is a little dicey for about 15’ if you’re apprehensive about being close to the edge of a vertical drop. The views are spectacular—360°. The hike is a 30 min. drive from the campground and not crowded, even on weekends. On the ride back après hike at Yayas deli.

Sawyer Pond Trail

This is a 3.1 mile hike with a very gradual 374’ vertical rise to a beautiful mountain pond surrounded by tent campsites. About a 45 min. ride. There is also a three sided shelter. It’s a great hike for kids since the rise is mild. Swimming is also an attraction where the vegetation has opened up access to the sandy bottom water. Once again après hike on the way back to the campground at Fabyans or Yayas deli.

Prospect Mountain Trail Weeks State Park

From the Reed Rd. trail head (about a 10 min. drive from campground) you can do a 2 mi., 720’ vertical out and back, or a 3.4 mi., 895’ vertical loop. However, there were a lot of blow downs so expect some bush whacking. You can also drive to the top where you’ll find a nice lookout tower with some interesting views. There’s also a deck off the Ken Jordan trail circling the top with great views of Vermont. Try the Copper Pig Brewery in Lancaster for après hike.

Pondisafety *

Real close by, about 2 min. This hike, bike ride or drive (may need 4 wheel) is approximately 10.5 miles , 860’ vertical. The trail is a gravel road. Great mountain, gravel or any bike other than road bike ride with a fun ride down. Not for young kids. The close proximity makes it a nice afternoon hike, bike ride or drive. No swimming access, bottom is muddy. Very picturesque and quiet.

Randolph Crystal Mine Trail

Hike (3.9 mi., 702’ vertical) to an abandon crystal mine GE used during WWI for the manufacture of radios. Presently it is a hole in the ground with access by rope. Supposedly there’s still crystal to be had should you choose to enter the shaft. But safety is a factor. The nearby location (7 min) makes it a very convenient hike through some nice maple forest. Sap lines go on forever in this forest. Observe one of the largest White Pine trees around along the way.

Pondicherry

Close by (10 min). It can be accessed from Airport Rd. along the Presidential Rail Trail. You can hike or bike ride the 3.2 mi., 147’ vertical to Cherry Pond and 4.9 mi. to Little Cherry Pond. Looks like real good moose country, although the popularity of the trail will most likely prevent sightings during the day. No swimming , it’s more of a moose salad bowl. Very picturesque and quiet. Close proximity allows for a nice afternoon sashay.

Zealand Hut Trail

Hike (5.4 mi., 607’ vertical). The only steep part of this hike is at the base of the hut for a very short distance. Pass along beaver ponds, footbridge crossings, waterfalls and beautiful scenery. 30 minutes from the campground by car. Usually there are muffins or some kind of breakfast bread for sale at the hut. The hut has been completely renovated and provides a great place to kick back. The hike can be crowded on weekends. Aprés hike at Fabians or Yayas.

Dome Rock

Short hike (2.8 mi., 1332’ vertical) within the Appalachia trail system alongside a stream for a good part of the way to a nice view. The Appalachia trail system is heavily traveled and very easy to follow. The parking area can be very crowded on weekends, however the trails within are numerous and cover a huge area. The best times to hike the trails in this area are mid week.

ARATHUSA FALLS

Hike (2.8 mi., 885’ vertical) to a 169’ cascading water fall. The water flows best after a rain and the trail will still not be real muddy. Hike follows along Beamis brook. Foot bridges over brook are a nice perk. This is a good hike for kids. The trail head is along Rt. 302 . This area can be crowded on weekends. Midweek is the best bet. Aprés hike refreshments can be had at Moat Mountain or Tuckerman Breweries, Fabyans or Yayas deli on the return to the campground.
